Back, Neck, Shoulder, Hip & Knee Pain
Acupuncture helps reduce back pain by relaxing muscle spasm, reducing inflammation around injured muscles and tendons and increasing the flow of blood and lymph to and from damaged tissue. It has also been shown to raise endorphins - the body’s natural pain killers - as well as relaxing the nervous system and raising serotonin levels so that a patient’s ability to cope with pain is improved.
Knee, shoulder and hip pain also respond well to acupuncture. The acupuncture channels criss-cross through the hips, shoulders and knees and can reach deeply into affected areas. Acupuncture works by influencing the local area around the knee, shoulder or hip but points adjacent to the painful area and further along the acupuncture channels increase the effect by relaxing the nervous system, helping the body to clear debris, swelling and inflammation from injured and traumatised tissue and by releasing the muscle spasm that can sometimes impinge and squeeze on nerves.
Acupuncturists are trained to get to the root of the problem rather than just to suppress symptoms. A detailed history will take factors such as diet, lifestyle, work-life balance, exercise, emotional health, previous injury and disease into account. So even if I see several people a day with lower back pain I would always evaluate each patient according to their particular circumstances and history and provide a uniquely tailored treatment plan.
For best results during each session Hanna chooses a combination of points local, distal and adjacent to the painful area. Some points are chosen because they are known to reduce inflammation, or relax tendons, or because they work well for that person’s constitution and character.
The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) which advises the National Health Service, as recently as May 2009 recommended a course of 10 acupuncture sessions over 12 weeks as on of the best ways to treat chronic lower back pain.
